Science Care was established in Phoenix, Arizona in June 2000. Founded by James Rogers, the firm has quickly become a national leader in facilitating whole body donation to support medical research and education.
Prior to starting Science Care, Mr. Rogers had worked for almost 7 years helping people to plan their funerals. During that time he had become aware that many people wanted to someday donate their bodies, but did not know where to turn. “It became very clear to me that many people were looking for a way to continue contributing to medicine and society, even after their passing,” says Mr. Rogers.
At the same time, Mr. Rogers says he also was learning of the great shortage of tissue for medical research and education.
“We formed Science Care as an answer to both these issues. We wanted to offer people a way to donate, who might not otherwise be able to. And, we wanted to help ease the shortage of tissues available for research,” he says.
In the current medical community, life-saving organ transplants attract significant attention and tend to overshadow the importance of whole body donation for medical research and education. “We are extremely pleased that organ transplants occur, and we feel take priority over donation for medical research, but donation for transplant and medical research are not mutually exclusive. A person can do both, plus many individuals do not qualify for transplant donation and would otherwise not have an alternative for donation,” says Rogers. “These tissues can play critical roles in the development of drug treatments and new surgical techniques and devices.”
