Science Care Receives Industry Accreditation

Local tissue bank receives accreditation by American Association of Tissue Banks as first of its kind in the industry PHOENIX – Science Care, a Phoenix medical research tissue bank, received accreditation from the American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB) recently for its operations in retrieval, processing, storage and distribution of willed body donated tissues.

This significant accomplishment was awarded after a written application process and comprehensive on-site inspection by an independent examiner. “We strive to meet the highest standards in the industry and work to be a leader in quality, safety and service,” said Jim Rogers, president of Science Care. “We are especially proud to be one of the first tissue banks of our kind to be represented as an accredited research tissue bank.”

The AATB is a scientific, not-for-profit, peer group organization founded in 1976 to facilitate the provision of transplantable cells and tissues. The association’s accreditation program ensures that tissue-banking activities are preformed in a professional manner consistent with vigorous standards. Following an inspection, tissue banks may be accredited for their operations including retrieval, processing, storage, and/or distribution of tissue.

“As the only specialized research and educational tissue bank on our accredited list, we are pleased to welcome Science Care to our association,” said Robert Rigney, CEO of AATB. “We feel it serves an important and often overlooked need for well-documented research tissue.”

In its efforts to maintain tissue banking at the highest level of quality, AATB maintains close liaison with officials of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, engaging in an on-going program of information exchange. To this end, FDA has provided informal monitoring of various AATB programs.
