PHOENIX, AZ -- (July 20, 2007) – Science Care, the first non-transplant tissue bank to be accredited by the American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB) was asked today to present their newly released Laboratory Technical Training Model in Boston this fall. The nationwide whole-body donation program is based in Phoenix and has been at the forefront of setting the standard for the donation and responsible use of human tissue for medical research and training.
With the growth of the laboratory and educational programs in both their Phoenix and Aurora, CO facilities, leaders began to develop an innovative approach to training laboratory staff. After examining training models across multiple industries, Science Care created a system that was unique to the field of tissue banking. The new program involves a four-step process designed to effectively deliver the training; document the ability of the trainee to perform the task; assign duties that demonstrate the trainees’ comprehension of the task; and finally measure the competency of the trainee. Science Care’s new model has brought about consistency across Science Care’s laboratory operations and has increased compliance through better documentation.
This new training model and its outcomes were reviewed by the Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee of the AATB for inclusion in this year’s annual program. Developers Johnell Fleming, Laboratory Supervisor; John Cover, Director of Quality Assurance; David Breedlove, Laboratory Manager; and Jim Rogers, President and CEO will travel to Boston, MA, to present the Laboratory Technical Training Model to tissue banks from across the country at the 31st Annual American Association of Tissue Banks Meeting, September 15-18, 2007.
