NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC VISITS THE VALLEY - DISCOVERING BENEFITS OF WHOLE BODY DONATION

PHOENIX, AZ (May 18, 2007)— The National Geographic Explorer series is coming to Phoenix Sunday as part of their one-hour documentary exploring the benefits of the human body after death. Producers tapped industry experts, Science Care, a nationwide organization based in Phoenix, to discuss the benefits of whole-body donation in advancing medical research and education. Science Care, the first accredited whole-body donation program in the United States, serves as a link between individual donors and medical researchers and educators.

Filming will take place in Science Care’s 16,000 square-foot Professional Education facility located in North Phoenix. The training center is designed to educate physicians from around the world on the latest medical techniques and advance medical devices to improve patient outcomes. Science Care also provides training for local fire departments to provide a realistic training environment for paramedics facing life or death situations in the field.

National Geographic will begin filming during Phoenix Fire Department’s paramedic training, where fire fighters will learn life-saving techniques including how to perform a cricothyrotomy. This procedure requires paramedics to cut through the skin of the neck, just below the Adam’s apple, and insert a tube to restore breathing. Dr. John Gallagher, EMS Medical Director for the Phoenix Fire Department, is being interviewed to discuss the impact whole-body donation has made in training paramedics. Until recently, his department was trained using plastic mannequins.

Dr. Mark Kartub, Medical Director of Science Care and a veteran pathologist, will address the shortage of human tissue available for research and training. “This is a wonderful opportunity to educate the public about the benefits of whole-body donation, an option that they may have not heard of or did not understand,” Kartub said about the opportunity to work with National Geographic on the documentary.

Filming is scheduled to take place over two days in Science Care’s North Valley training facility. The documentary is expected to air later this year as part of the National Geographic Explorer series.
