The Donation Process

We receive many, many calls per week and our Family Services staff are often asked, “What is the process really like at the time of passing?”…

The Science Care Donation Services Coordinators are ready to assist you 24 hours a day at 800.417.3747.  At the time of passing, someone involved in the final care of the donor places a call to Science Care to begin the process.  The caring, compassionate Science Care staff are trained to help answer any and all questions and to help the family through the donation process as efficiently as possible.  We are honored that so many families have trusted us with caring for their loved one through donation. We understand that the minutes, hours, and days after passing are often very difficult, confusing, and sad for surviving loved ones.  We at Science Care strive to make the process of donation as simple as possible so that you may focus on healing, your family and the final affairs of your loved one.

Q: Science Care does not pay for urns or memorial services for families of donors. Why?

As an accredited member of the American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB), Science Care cannot engage in any activity that may be construed as coercion to donation.  Specifically, “(n)either coercion nor inaccurate information shall be used in any manner to obtain Authorization.”*
Further, the Uniform Anatomical Gift Act (UAGA), implemented in nearly every state in the U.S., specifically states that the sale or purchase of donated tissue is strictly prohibited and may result in a felony conviction**.
