Answering Common Questions About Eligibility for Whole-Body Donation

Answering Common Questions About Eligibility for Whole-Body Donation

At Science Care, one of the most frequent questions we receive is: “Can I still donate my body if…?” Often, people worry that a medical condition, age, or lifestyle factor may disqualify them from becoming a whole-body donor. The good news is most people are eligible.

Our caring team is here to help clear up common misconceptions and explain how the process works so that you can feel confident making this generous and impactful decision.

Can I donate if I have cancer?

Cancer alone does not prevent someone from donating their body to science with our program. Eligibility is dependent on a full medical screening that will take place when the patient receives a terminal diagnosis, enters palliative care, or enters hospice care. If you have a loved one at this stage of care, please contact us at 800-417-3747x2 to complete the screening for our HOPE® program.

Can I donate if I am older?

There is no upper age limit for whole-body donation with Science Care. We welcome donors of all ages. In fact, our oldest donor to date was 113 years old. Every donation has value and can contribute to medical advancements.

Can I donate if I have a chronic illness?

Often, yes. Common conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, or arthritis will not prevent donation. Certain advanced infectious diseases (HIV, AIDS, Hepatitis B or C, etc.) will rule out donation eligibility, but other non-communicable or infectious chronic illnesses will not prevent someone from donating.

Can I donate if I am overweight or underweight?

Science Care reviews height and weight ranges during the screening process and again at the time of passing. Extremely low weight or extremely high weight may affect acceptance. This may vary over time based on the programs available at the time of passing.

Can I be both a body and organ donor?

Typically, lifesaving organ donation will not disqualify you from also donating through Science Care's program. It is important to register separately through each program and let your family know that you want to donate organs first and your body second.

Can I donate if I die at home or in hospice?

Science Care serves individuals in a variety of settings, including hospice, hospitals, and home environments. We are here around the clock for passing notifications to ensure a respectful, timely process when the passing occurs.
