Tribute

Doris Fayne (Thorogood), 95, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2026. Doris was born in London, England in 1931 at St. Mary’s Hospital in London. Doris would always preface this with the fact that this is the same hospital where Prince William and Prince Harry were born. Growing up on the east end of London was a normal childhood, that is until she was evacuated during the first wave of evacuations on September 1, 1939, two days before the British declaration of war. All alone, with just a knapsack on her back and her red gas mask bag, 8-year-old “Little Dollie” Doris was transported by train to the rural English countryside and ended up in Street, Somerset where the Bond family offered to take her in “for just one night.” That one night turned into over a decade of support from her foster family members and too many adventures to document. Among many notable achievements while she thrived in Somerset, were her allocution lessons with “Mr. Kenny” and her story which mirrors “My Fair Lady” transforming her cockney accent to perfect English. She also worked in the management office with Mr. Clark at the famous Clark Shoe Factory, which was just across the street from her new home. She remained with the Bond family up until she left to visit her older sister Rosemarie, a young war bride, in the United States in 1954. Shortly after arriving, Doris worked in the Chicagoland area as an Executive Secretary for a variety of companies, she was a model for Sbicca Shoes and loved reading, cooking, old movies, and enjoyed listening to music, including The Beatles. As an avid reader of both fiction and non-fiction, she jokingly called herself a walking encyclopedia of useless knowledge. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Lake County Partners in Aging, 655 Deerfield Road, # 100, PMB 331, Deerfield, IL 60015 (847-721-8414) or visit www.piahelp.org While there will be no formal funeral service, family and friends are invited to celebrate our mother’s long and happy life in their own special ways.
