Tribute

Frank was a notable artist and educator in Connecticut, born in Norwich in 1940. He attended Norwich Free Academy and later studied at the Hartford Art School. After serving on the USS Boston-CAG-1 as a radar technician in the Navy, he continued his education at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, earning both his Bachelor's and Master's of Fine Arts degrees from Tufts University. After graduating, Frank was awarded a grant to further study art and art history abroad and to expand his view on artistic expression. Novack returned to Norwich and was recruited by his alma mater to become a teacher at Norwich Free Academy. Frank embraced this opportunity, beginning an influential career as an art educator and serving for many years as Director of the Art School, helping to shape the minds and talents of countless students. For many years, he shared his love for Europe by leading highly sought-after art tours for his students, opening their eyes to a world of beauty and inspiration. In 1972, Frank married and welcomed two beloved daughters, Kate Louise and Anne Bernice. Though he later divorced, his daughters remained the center of his world. Frank was a gifted and prolific painter. His work, found in many private collections and the Slater Museum, wove together his many loves: gardens, travel, scuba diving, architecture, windows, light, and his favorite city, Paris. Frank held a deep appreciation for the elegance of architecture, and the spirit of thoughtful design and execution—whether in buildings, art, or daily life—that reflected both intention and beauty. Frank is survived by his two daughters, Kate Novack and Anne Novack; his son-in-law, James N. Winner-Arroyo; his adored grandson, Nicko Inti Winner (who affectionately called Frank, “Grampie Sonny,”); his sister and closest friend, Nancy Novack Caulfield and husband (James); and his extended family including many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. He was pre-deceased by his parents, Frank and Stella (Marcinkiewicz) Novack, his sister, Barbara Lobacz, and his brother, James Paul Novack. Frank was a man who embraced the world with curiosity, finding joy in travel, culture, art, wine, and history, and carrying himself always with proper manners and a gracious spirit. Frank will be profoundly missed.
