Frederick C. “Fred” Bucholz, 71, of Wheaton, Illinois, passed away on May 15 after a life filled with laughter, friendship, and devoted service to his community. A lifelong resident of DuPage County, he was known not only as a respected public official but as someone who made every gathering brighter simply by being there. Born on February 24, 1955, Fred grew up in Elmhurst and graduated from York High School in 1973, forming friendships that lasted his entire life. He attended Knox College, where he was a three-sport athlete and majored in political science, carrying with him the curiosity, humor, and easy charm that made him unforgettable. Fred spent more than 40 years serving the people of DuPage County, beginning his career in the Recorder’s Office in the early 1980s. He served as Chief Deputy Recorder for 20 years before being elected DuPage County Recorder of Deeds, a role he held from 2004 until retiring in 2020. His leadership modernized the office while preserving the county’s historic land records, leaving a lasting mark on DuPage County and the State of Illinois. He championed electronic recording statewide, served on the Illinois Electronic Recording Commission, and helped implement the Uniform Property Electronic Recording Act. He created the Property Fraud Alert System, strengthened protections for homeowners, and worked tirelessly to preserve documents dating back to 1839. His leadership of the Metro Recorder Group fostered collaboration among the region’s largest counties, improving efficiency for millions of residents. For all his professional accomplishments, Fred will be remembered most for how he made people feel. He was the life of the party, with a quick smile, warm laugh, and uncanny ability to make everyone feel valued. A master of small talk, he could strike up a conversation with anyone and, within minutes, find common ground. Many of Fred's friendships lasted decades, a testament to his loyalty, kindness, and deep care for the people in his life. He had a gift for connection. His presence filled a room, and his absence will be felt just as strongly. Fred is survived by his devoted wife, Becky, his steadfast partner in every chapter of life; his beloved children, Brigette (Dave) DeMarzo, Jack, and Danny; and four grandsons who brought him great joy. He is also survived by his brother, Phil Bucholz, and sister-in-law, Sherril, along with many nieces, nephews, and countless friends who were lucky to share in his humor, generosity, and big-hearted spirit. His legacy lives on in the community he served and in the many lives he touched. A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, July 26, from 12–4 p.m. at Arrowhead Golf Club. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration, and that you honor Fred’s memory by taking a moment to tell someone special in your life how much you care about them.
