Tribute

James Craig Stewart Jr. (Jim) passed away on April 11th, 2023 at his home in Santa Monica, California surrounded by family. Jim was born May 31st, 1942 in Philadelphia, PA. The family moved to Lynchburg, VA where James graduated from E.C. Glass High School and then went on to study Philosophy and Religion at Lynchburg College. As a member of the Lynchburg college concert choir, he encouraged his future wife Susan to audition for the group. They began a courtship and married the summer before their junior year. This June would have marked their 60th Anniversary. Jim and Susan raised three daughters in Roanoke, VA. Jim had several careers including social work, insurance, and computer repair. One constant was Jim’s love of music and active service in his church communities. He served on vestries, taught Sunday School, and was the director of the St. James Episcopal Church choir for nearly 20 years. Whether in Virginia, Florida, or California, Jim and Susan always sang together in their church choir--most recently at St. Augustine By-The- Sea Episcopal Church. Jim is predeceased by his parents James Craig Stewart Sr, and Ruth Esther Snowden. He is survived by his best friend and wife, Susan Garrett Stewart; his daughters, Amy Stewart and her husband Charles Grunder; Kate Stewart; Sally Miller and her husband Stuart Miller; his sister, Sue Martin; and grandchildren Stan Grunder and his wife Casey; Ben Wintrip; Jacob Miller and Jolie Miller. A memorial service will be held at St. Augustine By-The-Sea Episcopal Church in Santa Monica, California on May 20, 2023 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Augustine By-The-Sea Episcopal Church to be distributed to musical and social justice programs at parishes dear to Jim. https://augbysea.breezechms.com/give/online
