Tribute

Joyce M. Anderson League was known to family members almost exclusively by tHe nickname “Chub” due to her resemblance to a cute 1930s cartoon character “Little Chubbins”. She was born in Chicago to Harry and Joyce Anderson. The family moved to Des Plaines, Illinois, when Joyce was 8. As a teen, Joyce worked at Fannie May Candy Shop and later her sister, Pam, also worked there. Joyce graduated from Maine West High School and National College of Education. Joyce was a grade school teacher and school librarian in Arlington Heights, IL. In the late 1960s Joyce was accepted by the US Air Force to go to Japan to teach the children of American service personnel. While in Japan she climbed Mt. Fuji. She met and married Harry League, USAF, in Tokyo. When they returned to the US, they eventually bought a house in Kenilworth, IL, where Joyce continued to live after their divorce, until early 2023 when she was moved to Belmont Village Memory Care Facility. She died there in fall 2023. Joyce League had no children. After she retired from teaching, Joyce worked at retail stores Von Maur and Crate and Barrel. Joyce was an avid reader. She loved flowers, particularly orchids, and was a long-time member of the Chicago Botanic Garden. She supported many charities and loved to travel. She is survived by sister Pam Anderson, brother Russ (Lisa) Anderson, nephew Matthew (Beth) Anderson, great-nephew and great-niece Enzo and Sophie Anderson.
