Richard J. Sanchez, born in 1938, lived a life defined by quiet courage, endless curiosity, and a bright, enduring wit. In 1963, he joined the Fire Department of New York, spending 27 years protecting his community and running toward dangers most would run from. Through heavy smoke, the threat of building collapses, exposure to hazardous chemicals, and the fury of some of the city's worst fires, he never wavered. His fighter’s spirit carried him through every challenge. That same spirit guided him throughout his battle with cancer. First diagnosed in 1988, he defeated it for decades before the disease returned in 2024. Though more than one doctor suggested the battle could not be won, Richard simply refused to surrender. Instead, he chose to live fully, meeting his final years with the same gentleness, humor, and determination that defined his youth, until his final days in August 2026. Richard was a deeply loving man. After retirement, he spent over 15 years delivering warmth and sustenance through volunteering with Meals on Wheels. Retiring didn’t end his service to the community, and neither did his passing. Even now, his final act of donating his body to science ensures that his legacy of helping others will continue long beyond his lifetime. Richard was both intelligent and practical. He was just as comfortable under the hood of a car as he was lost in a science fiction story, dancing around the house to disco music, or leading the table during family card games. Starting in the 1950’s, he was a familiar sight jogging along FDR Drive. Jogging was the hobby that anchored his lifelong commitment to health and vitality. Richard is survived by Joan, his wife of 45 years, along with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. As his family navigates the profound sadness of his passing, they find solace in the timeless rhythm of Ecclesiastes 3:1-4: "For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven... A time to weep, and a time to laugh; A time to mourn, and a time to dance." This sentiment is clear to see through Richie’s long and fruitful life, and his memory is a lasting blessing to all who knew him.
