Born in Stambaugh/Iron River, Michigan, on January 8, 1941, Ronald was the son of the late Waino and Olga (née Maki) Markkola. After attending Iron River Schools, Ronald honorably served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1960 to 1964. On December 5, 1964, Ronald married his high school sweetheart, Beverly (Ross) Markkola. Together, they shared 61 years of marriage, beginning their life together in Waukesha, WI. Ronald was a man of great work ethic; he began his career with his Uncle Wally at the Archie Ladwig Co. and went on to contribute to many local industries, including Wisconsin Centrifugal, Quad Graphics, and Sussex Hamilton High School. Hobbies and Community; even after retiring from Quad Graphics in 2011, Ronald remained active, often found mowing grass for his elderly neighbors or working summer shifts at the high school. He had a passion for life’s simple pleasures: cheering at the Slinger Speedway, attending Sussex Hamilton football games, riding his motorcycle, and dancing at Tallingers. During the quieter winter months, he found joy and focus in Diamond Art painting.
Ronald’s legacy lives on through his beloved wife, Beverly; his brother, Kurt (Brenda) Markkola of Iron River, MI; and his three children: Alysa Masek of Sussex, WI, Ronna Engelken (Mark Neumer) of Shawnee, KS, and Wayne (Lisa) Markkola of Hartford, WI. He was the proud grandfather of nine: Erika, Ryan (Alison), Rocco Jay, Ravyn Ariel, Shannen, Branden, Allison, Collin, and Mason. He was also blessed with eight great-grandchildren: Westley, Eleanor, Preston, Paxton, Jiordan, Skylar, Keagan, and Emerie. He will be deeply missed by his loyal dog, Suzie, and his Siamese cat, Angela.
