Stephen Paul Miller passed away peacefully on the 7th day of August before the sun grew bright. Having lived for almost 88 years, he died when he knew he could not return to the courts and the sports he loved: tennis, hand ball and pickleball. His final fall caused damage we could see, as well as inner problems we could not, and the list appeared to lengthen as his appetite decreased leading him to ask the would-be healers not to mend but numb the pain. Then he stressed his expected request for no one to gather in his name, not to mourn and not to celebrate his life. Unassuming, he was not concerned with glory, nor acknowledging the hero that he often seemed to be. Healing always more than his profession, he continued caring for others for as long as he survived. Kind, as well as thoughtful, he was generous with gifts: recording selected music meant for others to enjoy or assisting with devices he had mastered. Encouragement, as well as invitations seemed to flow, but his time and his attention would be valued on their own. Curiosity would nourish his passion for learning and discussion, also sharing what he read and what he thought. His eyes appeared to twinkle when he smiled, like Santa Claus, and he liked bringing smiles to others with his jokes. Both a lender and a giver, he sought nothing in return, but his harvest was abundant when it came to gratitude. Despite his many efforts to find partners for his friends, they were more successful when it came to matching him, leading to our nearly thirteen years of happiness. Love, whenever it comes, can be a blessing.
