Stephen Thomas Pickering was born on January 29, 1947, to his parents, Carl and Marie Pickering, in Warren, Rhode Island, the youngest of four brothers. Steve was in the U.S. Army for three years. He worked as a tech consultant for the Diners Club and City Bank. Steve married Melinda Babb Rather late in life (the wedding theme was “when pigs fly!”) on October 17, 2009. Steve was known to his family and close friends as a loving, generous man. He was a careful steward of his own funds and those of his church. He loved to be with his family and friends, to play golf, travel, and watch all kinds of sports. Steve was very happy that his body would be donated to Science Care to help improve research and care for others. When his wife Mel had a stroke years ago, Steve nurtured her back to health. Steve died July 30, 2026. He is survived by his oldest brother Emery Pickering (Barbara Storey); by the wife he loved and cherished, Melinda; by Melinda’s children Nick Rather, his wife Ashley and their children Reid and Royce; Cate Rather Foster and her children L.J., James, Daniel and Jonathan; in-laws Jeff and Kathy Babb, their children Sarah (Mark) Bremhorst, Eloise and Otto; Andy Babb (Lara). Steve and Melinda were very active members of Mountair Christian Church, 1390 Benton St, Lakewood, CO 8021, where his service will be held Friday, August 21 at 2:00 P.M. Donations in Steve’s honor may be sent to: https://www.mountaircc.org/ with the designation “Memorial Funds,” or sent to the address above with the same designation.
