Steve McCurley
Tribute
In Loving Memory of Steve McCurley. On May 23, 2025, we lost a remarkable man—Steve McCurley—who passed away suddenly of a heart attack in Jacksonville, Illinois. He was a father of 2, a passionate athlete, and an unforgettable spirit who touched countless lives. Born with a zest for life and adventure, Steve dedicated over 30 years of his career to Agnew State Hospital in California, serving as a psychiatric technician. But Steve did far more than just show up to work—he created opportunity, dignity, and joy for those he served. He coached Special Olympics athletes to gold medal victories and launched an on-site bike program, helping patients experience the freedom and pride that comes with movement and achievement. Steve's daughters' childhood memories are filled with roller-skating and cycling alongside their dad—time spent not just in motion, but exploring nature. He passed along to them his courage, drive, and fierce sense of loyalty as sisters. An athlete to the core, Steve’s accomplishments were many: he was a Golden Gloves boxer, a proud World Cup downhill cycling racer in 1994, and a high school football star who loved to recount the plays and victories of his youth. And through it all, his heart never strayed far from the Santa Cruz coastline, where he found peace and joy in the ocean breeze and sunlit sand. Steve’s loyalty ran deep—especially when it came to his beloved Raiders. Whether in Oakland or Las Vegas, he cheered for them with unwavering passion. Football season meant more than just a game; it was tradition, pride, and a piece of his story he loved to share. Steve lived actively and full of adventure. Rest in peace, Steve. You will be forever missed and always remembered.
