William wanted to contribute to the sharing of potential cures and increased awareness of health issues that disproportionately affect African American families—communities where donation participation and research contributions have historically been limited. He wanted to leave a meaningful legacy for his family, with the hope that the health challenges he experienced might one day help other families facing similar circumstances. I am incredibly proud that he embraced this opportunity and also encouraged not only a few of his siblings but also others within his community to participate as well. Helping others was at the heart of who William was, and his legacy will continue to live on through the students he impacted, the lives he touched, and the research that his family hopes will one day contribute to significant advancements in treatment—and perhaps even cures—for those who come behind us in the future.
